Autism is an issue that is complex and shrouded in mystery for many parents, although it is faced by a multitude of families. It means additional challenges, often not understood by those around them.
Those raising a child on the autism spectrum often feel powerless when they see their children ‘locked’ in their own world, unable to make relationships or fully integrate into society.
However, there is new hope on the horizon – hyperbaric oxygen therapy. It is an innovative method that is gaining popularity as a tool in the treatment of children and adolescents on the autism spectrum.
Developments in the field of neurology and ways of restoring proper brain function are leading scientists to conclude that proper oxygenation of brain cells – especially using a hyperbaric chamber – could have a significant role to play in the issue of autism.
But what exactly does this involve? How do you benefit from oxygen therapy and how much does it cost? Do you need a referral from your doctor?
It’s time to answer these questions – and, in the process, raise some other issues that are important in the context of this topic.
How does the treatment actually work?
Hyperbaric therapy is an innovative method based on taking advantage of the salutary effect on the body of supplying it with oxygen in higher concentrations than in natural conditions. The whole process takes place in special hyperbaric chambers.
It is worth mentioning that this form of therapy is characterised by a high level of safety and the list of contraindications is relatively short. Nevertheless, it is important to consult your doctor before you decide to undergo it.
Coming back to the hyperbaric chamber itself: it is a device in which the patient is exposed to increased atmospheric pressure (usually 1.3 ATA) while being supplied with pure oxygen.
As a result of this process, oxygen enters the body’s tissues and organs in a concentration that would simply be impossible without these artificially created conditions.
How does hyperbaric oxygen therapy support therapy for people on the autism spectrum?
Research and clinical observations suggest that hyperbaric therapy benefits autistic people. Its mechanism of action is multifaceted:
Reduction of brain inflammation
In 2005. John Hopkins published the autopsy results of autistic people – it turned out that there was an inflammatory process going on in their brains. Many subsequent studies have confirmed these results.
Using HbOT (short for hyperbaric oxygen therapy), the body gets an extra dose of oxygen, which proves to be a significant help in reducing inflammation in the brain. This is often present in children on the autism spectrum, as evidenced by the study cited above, and its reduction can help to improve daily functioning.
We have a number of studies of autistic children that demonstrate significant improvements in brain function following hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

Oxygenation of areas affected by hypoperfusion
Hypoperfusion is reduced blood flow to the brain. It is a common problem in people with ASD, i.e. ‘autism spectrum disorder’ (it is estimated to affect up to 86% of people with autism!).
A study by Dr James Wilcox of the Department of Psychiatry at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center found that typically hypoperfusion worsens as the child gets older, and becomes “quite profound” in older children. Reduced blood flow may account for many of the key symptoms of autism, and its reduction may account for the resolution of symptoms. In turn, oxygenation of sensitive areas can lead to a reduction; this is where hyperbaric chamber therapy can help.
Angiogenesis
Under this name is the process of creating new blood vessels, the development of which is promoted by HbOT. This translates into improved blood circulation in the brain, which in turn contributes to improved neuronal function.
Removal of toxins
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy can help to remove toxins from the body, which is particularly important for people with autism, who may be more sensitive to them.
Intestinal regeneration
Research suggests that oxygen therapy may contribute to intestinal regeneration, which is important as gastrointestinal problems and chronic inflammation of the intestines are among the list of problems often affecting children with ASD.
Stimulation of stem cell production
Oxygen therapy can stimulate the production of stem cells, which influences the efficient regeneration of damaged tissues and organs.
Not just a treatment, but an improvement in quality of life
Oxygen therapy has long been automatically associated with the treatment of various conditions and diseases. However, an increasing number of people in the medical world are discovering that it has a much broader application.
This is because it not only contributes to the fight against disease, but can improve quality of life and the ability to function in society. This is particularly relevant for people on the autism spectrum.
Regular use of hyperbaric chamber therapy leads to the following improvements in the daily functioning of people with ASD:
● increased sleep quality,
● improved concentration and ability to focus,
● cessation of intestinal complaints (or significant reduction),
● better contact with parents,
● improved language function,
● reduction of behaviours demonstrating irritability, discouragement,
● improved ability to perform tasks set for the person on the autism spectrum,
● improved functioning of the immune system,
● perceived improvement in small and large motor skills,
● general improvement in mood.
The topic of the relationship between autism and HbOT is the subject of ongoing research by scientists. However, the first results and reports coming from autistic people and their families are very promising.
Where can one receive such therapy?
The number of facilities offering hyperbaric oxygen therapy is increasing, and those wishing to receive such treatment are increasingly free to choose. Some larger hospitals and medical centres have their own chambers, which makes access much easier.
We can also find hyperbaric chambers in some smaller health centres and private clinics. What is more, they do not have to be operated by medical staff and therefore appear in places such as fitness clubs or beauty salons.
All this means that patients are free to choose the location that best suits their needs and preferences.
Who can refer for oxygen therapy?
The use of this method is not limited to people on the autism spectrum; it also includes patients with a number of other health problems. The decision to refer for oxygen therapy may depend on the specialist who diagnoses and assesses the patient’s condition.
Most often, HbOT is carried out on the basis of a referral from a specialist associated with the treatment of the condition. This is important as it allows the intensity of therapy to be tailored to the individual patient’s needs.
Is it possible to undergo hyperbaric oxygen therapy without a referral?
Yes, you can. A referral is absolutely not necessary. However, as we have already mentioned, and it is worth repeating, before entering the chamber, you should consult a medical professional who will clearly state that there are no contraindications to receiving hyperbaric oxygen.
What to look for when choosing a hyperbaric chamber facility?
When choosing a facility offering hyperbaric oxygen therapy, there are several key factors to consider. First and foremost, the facility should be certified and licensed, confirming the quality and safety of the therapy. Be sure that the staff operating the chamber have received appropriate training.
How much does an HbOT treatment cost?
The cost of oxygen therapy can vary from facility to facility and region to region. We can give you an idea of how much such a treatment costs with us.
The price for a single session in a soft chamber is PLN 150 and in a hard chamber it is PLN 200.
The cost of single treatments is reduced when planning an entire series. Ten entries into the soft chamber costs PLN 1,000 (PLN 100 for a single session). For the hard chamber: PLN 1200 (PLN 120 per session).

Oxygen therapy is a worthwhile topic – especially for parents of children on the autism spectrum
Research findings and reports from patients and professionals present a clear picture. Oxygen therapy has great potential for improving the quality of life of people on the autism spectrum.
By increasing oxygen supply to the brain, the use of this method can help to reduce inflammation, improve social functioning and develop communication skills. These are promising prospects for parents and carers of children with autism.
Are you interested in hyperbaric oxygen therapy for yourself or your child? If so, we encourage you to contact a specialist to assess exactly what benefits this form of therapy can bring. You should have no trouble choosing a facility – as we have already mentioned, there are more and more of them in our country.
We also invite you to share this article with other parents of children on the autism spectrum. In this way, we can together spread awareness of oxygen therapy and its potential benefits. This is another step towards improving the quality of life of children with autism and hope for a better future for them!
